This, to us, felt like the quintessential New England restaurant/inn. We went here for a nice romantic dinner our last night in Block Island and it didn't disappoint. We were able to get a reservation with only about 3 hours notice for a Saturday night, which was great since we neglected to plain ahead. The decor is nice, traditional and what I would expect at a fancy-ish bed and breakfast in the area. Although it was really dark when we got there, I could tell immediately how gorgeous the building was and wished we'd gotten there earlier to sit on the Adirondack chairs out on the lawn and enjoy the sunset. Their wine list was outrageous. Seriously, it's own binder with pages and pages and pages. I get easily overwhelmed by wine lists like that, but they had a nice cheat section in the back which described the different kinds of wine and we settled in on a bottle of Pinot Noir. We started off with a bite of pork and some sort of salsa verde, complements of the chef, which was delish. After salads for the both of us, out came the entrees. Portion sizes were small, and my initial thought was "I will eat a cheeseburger after this," but the quality was there so we were left satisfied. I had the vegetarian dish of the night (grilled seitan with rice and a chili sauce), and BF had the chicken and biscuits. I had immediate an immediate case of food envy when I tasted his dish. It was GOOD. My favorite was dessert. We had cheesecake with an orange-bourbon-butterscotch glaze. To die for.

The Atlantic Inn has some of the best dishes on the island. It may be a little pricey and the portions are somewhat small, but everything I had for my meal was delicious and quite impressive. My family and I went on a Saturday night around 730 and the place was just starting to get crowed. We had reservations and were given a seat by the window with an amazing view of the ocean. The wine list was very extensive and the server offered great recommendations. The menu was also not your standard American flair, as it was infused with a lot of exotic ingredients. My sister had squid ink pasta with her salmon. I had foie gras stuffed chicken. My father had thai mussels and my mother's steak was served over a bed of pasta. Everything about this meal (and this place) was great. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Block Island.

Unlike Brian, I cannot comment on the hotel portion of this lovely Inn, however, I can wholeheartedly recommend the restaurant at Atlantic Inn. The restaurant is located at the rear of the Inn and is decorated in the standard East Coast Cottage style with plenty of antiques mixed in. The menu is diverse, but with a heavy emphasis on the fresh seafood and locally grown veggies. The drinks are expertly prepared, strong, and brought quickly. A good selection of beer and wines in addition to cocktails. I was here with a party of ten and not a single one of us could complain about what was on our plate. A gold star to the chef for his lovely warm lobster roll. I know, it's hard to mess up a lobster roll, but this roll was different. Whereas most of the other establishments that we frequented prepared lobster rolls with a generous helping of mayo or butter, Atlantic's lobster roll was light, flavorful and served on a crispier roll than one would expect.

We didn't stay at the Atlantic Inn so I will only comment on the dinner that we had. To start I called and asked to get an 8 o'clock reservation and was told they could only accommodate either 7:45 or 8:15, no big deal, so we opted for 8:15. When we arrived there was exactly 1 party in the entire restaurant and throughout dinner only 2 other parties arrived. So why 8 o'clock could not be accommodated is let's say interesting. The wait staff took forever to come over and even greet us, we finally ordered drinks which was 2 cocktails and a bottle of wine, the wives were drinking the wine. The waiter brought our drinks first and proceeded to take another 10 mins before he brought the wine over for our wives. In my book of etiquette the ladies at the table are served first. We then ordered some appetizers and our meal, because it had been so long we had plenty of time to decide on everything. The lobster and potato soup appetizer was bland and had no flavor except the pepper that I put on after trying it, but they did make a good beet salad, and they cheese selection was outstanding. Our dinners were seared sea bass, which I got, and pasta Bolognese. The seared sea bass had 3 bones in it, was completely raw in the middle (which is fine with me if I am asked if I want it rare and it was tuna), the pasta Bolognese had no flavor, was under salted and the egg noodles did not work at all with the dish. At this point we should have asked for the check and left, but being gluttons for punishment we instead opted to get desert, I mean who can make crème Brule complicated. It came out with birdseed on top and a honeydew whipped cream that just did not go with the dish at all. I poured the birdseed and scooped the whipped cream off and the crème Brule itself was ok. We then proceeded to wait almost 20 mins for the waiter to come over and check to see if we wanted anything else or in our case wanted to get the hell out of there! We finally got our bill which we split down the middle and left thinking that would be the end of this joyous experience, well we were wrong. This morning after checking our credit card statement somehow the couple we were with were charged the entire amount plus tip, even though we were both given a slip with the entire charge divided evenly which we each signed gave back to the waiter. Needless to say we will go back to Block Island, but we will not go back to The Atlantic Inn.

Amazing little gem I never knew existed on Block Island. The hotel ended up with a last minute cancellation and I was able to get a room for 2 nights at the end of August. The hotel has a lot of character and it is a nice little peaceful retreat from all the Old Harbor activities. The hotel has an amazing view, courteous staff and let me tell you DELISH tapas...so good we had to come back the second night for the truffled Mac and cheese fritters along with the peel and eat shrimp. Really enjoyed the hospitality, the view and the food! Will be back next year!

Great location a few blocks from the hustle and bustle of Old Harbor, very clean, wonderful staff, gorgeous view, nice continental breakfast included, excellent evening tapas and drinks on the porch and front lawn. You cannot beat this view; being up the hill you have a bit of a walk from the center of town but that makes it a restful place to enjoy. The room was comfortable, very clean, with up to date décor that compliments the Inn. We met people who come to Block Island often and don't stay anywhere else because of how lovely it is.

Cocktails, cheese plate and sunset at The Atlantic Inn. Oh my! This is one of those "must do's" every time I'm on Block Island. Its fun with family and friends. The staff is always attentive. The food and drinks hit the spot and the view is spectacular! Add it to your sunset list.

Stayed for two nights next door at The Spring House and wanted to stay one more night. Called The Atlantic and booked the last room. The lawn/porch service late afternoon into evening was incredible; the views, the sunset, the appetizers and drinks! Every person working there was professional and unassuming. Had dinner in the small bar and the wonderful food continued. We wanted to finish our night on the porch and we were very pleased to be offered a blanket! Our room was ok, but it was sold to us a "moderately sized", so we were not surprised. Overall a fantastic stay. A new find for us on BI, we will be back.

Whether you're looking for a upscale dinner or tapas and cocktails out on the lawn, the atlantic is a great option. I've also stayed at the hotel and had a wonderful experience. The entire staff is knowledgeable and helpful. The food is amazing and the wine list is great as well. Try the chefs specialty menu - it's 4 courses for $52 and perfectly portioned.

I always consider this second to The Spring House, but there's really no reason for that. Inventive cocktails and interesting nibbles to be enjoyed in adirondack chairs on their hilltop perch. I have one really special memory here of hanging out w/my friend and her then 2 1/2 year old daughter who was singing and generally enjoying herself. As dusk fell and it turned chilly a kind waitress came out w/a blanket for the little one....we got to relax a little longer while she slept snugly on her mom's lap.

Stayed here to attend a Dogfish Head beer dinner. The old school charm is apparent once you walk in the door. It's traditional New England through and through. The staff were pleasant and on point during happy hour on the deck...always a challenge when you have comings and goings of guests. The dinner itself was spectacular...their chefs did an amazing job pairing the food and the 6 different styles of beer. The rooms are comfortable...as an fyi, there are no televisions in the rooms or AC...but with the breeze off the ocean it was very comfortable, even after a very hot day. I would definitely stay here again!

**review of the hotel** My first trip to the Island was a mini-honeymoon, we stayed at the Atlantic Inn and were thrilled beyond words. The rooms are gorgeous, with a very romantic victorian atmosphere, the view is lovely and we admired the sunrise over the ocean from our room every morning. The staff was adorable and provided aloe vera for our unexpected sunburn (we went in September). The best part: home made pastries every morning. Different kinds every morning! Delicious!!! Served in the beautiful sun porch. We can't wait to go back!!! It feels like home.

Love that they handed us blankets as we walked onto the grass as the evenings tend to get chilly. The staff was so super attentive and nice. Beautiful views, starry skies, cold Westheimer brews and perfectly shareable Lobster Sliders made for a wonderful, low key evening. The white kitty that kept us company on the lawn was a bonus but do keep in mind she has a sophisticated palate and prefers her lobster with no mayo.

The Atlantic Inn is a quaint, charming and very old fashioned inn on a beautiful piece of land with a beautiful view of the town, the water, and the rolling hills of BI. Head out to the lawn just before sunset and order yourself a cocktail -- this place boasts the best seats in town to watch the sun going down. The inn itself is very old, and doesn't seem to have been updated (save for electricity and plumbing) since it was built. While the rooms are quite small, they are comfortable, although on a breezy September night, our room was so stifling I can't imagine what it would be like in the heat of July or August. When I say old fashioned, I mean it -- they don't book online. You have to call to reserve your room and then send a check within a week, or you'll lose the room. You can give them a credit card over the phone, but they'll charge you a fee and then run it through one of those hand-operated imprinting devices. How 1985! There are also no phones or TVs in the rooms. No AC, either. The inn is clean, the staff is sweet and the complimentary breakfast decent. The restaurant is pretty good, too and worth making a reservation at for at least one meal during your stay. I would definitely stay here again!

The Atlantic Inn is located a short uphill hike from town. I mention the hill because the hill is key to its location. In the evenings when the sun goes down tables and chairs are set up on the front lawn, all overlooking the hill. The view is beautiful, quiet, peaceful and very New England preppy-like. I say very New England preppy-like because you'll feel like the person sitting next to you could very well be somebody from the Kennedy clan (of JFK fame). You don't have to book a room to enjoy this Block Island classic. You can easily grab a few drinks at the bar or eat in the wonderful dining room. Everyone is welcome (Although if you're wearing a t-shirt or sandals you probably won't be welcomed. That's understandable because it's not THAT type of place). Although I didn't find their menu overly impressive, what I ordered was both terrific and reasonably priced. The portion sizes were fine and I didn't walk away hungry. The cheese plate and frickles (deep fried pickles) were both top notch. My only qualms with the place is its staff. It's not that they were awful. They weren't. It's just the attitude they carried was that they didn't give a #%@. OK I get that the staff has to put up with tourists every day of the week. I get it. I worked at a ski resort myself for one year and dealt with tourists every day. But that's what I signed up for and that's what they signed up for too. Even though they may not care they should act like they care. Earlier in the day, I had been at the Beach Head and the staff at the Atlantic could learn a thing or two from the crew at the Beach Head. I seriously mean that. The Beach Head staff was falling all over me to made me feel like I was truly welcomed. Overall it's a five star experience (speaking for the restaurant) with one star subtracted for the careless and apathetic wait staff.

We had dinner there over 12 years ago, was great. On 6/24 dinner was very disappointing, meat raw not medium, my wifes appetizer was much too smoky, did not mention it on menu. To top it off they double billed my credit card. The only positive to this place is having a drink on the veranda, but then view to ocean has been partially blocked due to new construction. We remember an open view that was beautiful. Would not come back here again. Lee M. Emerson, N.J.

The family celebrated our matriarch's 90th birthday with a dinner for 25, and we were extremely happy with every aspect. Food was top-notch. Servers were all friendly and expert. Despite having had a wedding the day before which kept the pastry chef too busy to do a cake for us, the Atlantic Inn got a cake we all loved from a bakery on the island. Brad was very helpful (and patient!) in the planning process and chose great wines for us. Although it was not cheap, the price was a good value, too, in our opinion. They came through for us in every way and we would go back without hesitation.

Ok, first we stayed here due to so many positive reviews. For a hotel that charges +$300/ night for the tiniest room on the top floor perhaps they could have had someone help with the luggage? After all there is no elevator . Perhaps they could have had a small hair conditioner bottle along with the shampoo in the bathroom? Perhaps they could invest in a decent quality mattress so we might not toss and turn all night? Perhaps some kind of small amenity in the room like a coffee maker? - I realized with the paper thin walls a TV was never an option. The complete lack any type of privacy from sound in your room was another issue I won't bother going into detail on why but anyone walking buy can hear even the slightest noise coming from your room or the one next door. Perhaps they could clean the cups , glasses , dishes etc from the night before and breakfast from the porch and lawn area with some frequency rather than have them on display all day? Perhaps we could relax with a drink on the porch earlier than 4:30 in the afternoon when they start service? We've stayed at many quaint old New England hotels so we do not expect Ritz Carlton service but for the price this was well below the standards of any of these types of hotels we have stayed at before and I would suggest doing a lot of research on where you stay prior to coming to block island.

I've never stayed here, but aside from Winfields, it's the only other restaurant on island that might justify packing heels. That said, with a sundress and flipflops you won't feel out of place. My favorite thing to do here is to watch the sunset on the lawn and get some hors d'oeuvres/tapas with a glass of wine and good company. Though things can quickly get pricy, there are few things more relaxing and luxurious. Sometimes the service on the lawn can be a little patchy, but you're there to lazily pick at peel-and-eat shrimp and sip some bubbly, not to get in and get out. The restaurant itself is about as fancy as you'll find on-island, and the entrees usually live up to expectation. Absolutely worth a visit.

We came here during our block island experience & really had a nice experience. We had decided to have dinner there but in the future we would've stayed on the porch for apps & dessert; the menu looking amazing. For dinner I had the pre fixe which included two apps, an entree, and dessert. I started with the potato leek soup which was tremendous. The presentation was great with whole cooked hazelnuts in the soup. The second app was the seafood stew which was meh. Sort of bland & more like a soup with a thin broth than a nice stew. My husband started with the mango glazed duck which was on top of a tamale stuffed with some kind of squash, amazing. In his words "it's the best app I've had out here". For the Entree, I had the wagyu flank steak with Brussels sprouts, grilled onions (sort of) and a squash purée. It was very good although the meat was chewy. My husband had the lobster which didn't work. It had so many components on the plate that it all didn't work together. Dessert was had on the porch, watching an amazing sunset. We were even offered blankets if we got cold which was a nice touch. Our dessert was a dark chocolate tart with vanilla ice cream. Very rich but very good. The wait staff was very attentive. I would def come back but probably just to eat the smaller dishes and watch the sunset.

Stayed here for two nights for a quick romantic getaway. Rooms were clean, decorated beautifully, and the inn itself and its' location is always perfection. The staff is friendly and helpful. The first day there was a problem with the water, and to our surprise they refunded us the entire nights stay without having to ask, which was a pleasant surprise after a typically expensive Block Island vacation. Ate dinner the last night, a little too fancy for our taste, but delicious. The wine list is to die for however. Definitely a gem on the island. Make sure to walk down the hill and visit the camels and the one eyed donkey zebra. Only downside is that there is no air-conditioning, but that is standard on the island.

Its confirmed. After spending another week on Block this year and eating at every restaurant on island (except Eli's), I can honestly say this is hands down, the BEST restaurant on the island. However, diners beware--the menu is not your average american fare. Expect squid ink pasta, whole fried prawn soup, foie gras and a dominican breakfast. The chef is awesome and super friendly--don't be afraid to ask to meet him while you're there.

My husband and I have to agree, it's the best on the island. Ambiance, delicious food, spectacular service. Every time we have been here, it has exceeded expectations. We both had prix Fixed - thought the portions were smallish, but awesome and in the end was very happy with the amount of food - more would have been too much! Gorgeous and delectable deserts too. We were talking about celebrating a big wedding anniversary here ( 3 years in advance). I have no doubt it will take us three years to save to pay for it ;^) but it will be wonderfully memorable.

The Atlantic Inn is a fantastic old Victorian building built sometime in the late 19th century. It contains around 25 or so rooms and has a commanding presence on top of a hill within walking distance of Rebbecca and the center of town. Southeast lighthouse and Mohegan Bluffs are only a short bike ride away in the other direction. The location is gorgeous with great views, a huge pouch and lovely flowers and plants everywhere you look. The rooms are decorated with period furniture and lovely old paintings and the entire interior gives the sense of stepping back in time. The staff were extremely polite and friendly and the meals at the hotel superb, with many of the veggies grown right on grounds. A great place and the only negative is that it tends to get crowded during the summer and you have to book well in advance.

Yes, the views are excellent and drinks are 100% worth it on the porch - particularly around sunset. One of the prettiest perches on the island and a great lunch, cocktail, happy hour or later night nibbles spot. But...best restaurant on Block? Hardly. This establishment does not train its waitstaff sufficiently to justify its prices, nor is the kitchen staff confident/competent enough to tailor dishes to accommodate special requests (i.e. no dairy, gluten, etc.). This is ok at Denny's, not ok when entrees are topping the $30's. Our waitress last summer was unable to describe any aspect of the wine list or food menu whatsoever. I mean, it was laughably bad - so much so, that I felt bad for her. Nor was the kitchen willing to tailor any dishes in any small or meaningful way to accommodate special requests (in my case, no dairy). And so we decided to leave and have a drink on the porch with a nibble - a super over-priced not very good shellfish platter - segueing elsewhere (Spring House down the hill) for dinner. Our waiter on the porch for cocktails was far more competent - somewhat delightful even - and he acknowledged that the weakest waitstaff are sent inside to work the restaurant, while the stronger servers are on the porch. This blew my mind, given the extraordinarily high price point inside. I also did not dig the vibe inside - far too cutesy/Victorian for my taste. I prefer a cleaner, more modern feel both in decor and on my plate, and the whole scene did not do it for us. It was, frankly, very disappointing, as it was my man's birthday dinner - but a great night was had nonetheless, particularly once we escaped the main dining room hand in hand laughing with each other. I won't return (even for drinks).

The BEST place on the island to have a fantastic dinner, HANDS DOWN!!! The service was superb, the food was delicious and they pay attention to every detail, unlike the other "established" establishments on the island. I had the prefixx, while my husband and friend had the full course dinners and all were absolutely perfect. I had the fillet mignon and while it appeared small, it was perfect because all the prefixx meals came w/full-sized desserts. They were superb and the pastry chef sent out extra samples for our after dinner drinks. Kudos to The Atlantic!! Unfortunately, I went at the end of my two week vacation and would have gone back if I had time. During our two week stay, we went to Eli's:( ,The Manissees, The Spring House, The Narragansett and Winfield's and the only one that came close to The Atlantic for service and food was Winfiled's. If you cannot make it up the hill, their food, attention and service was great, and the bill was smaller than our lunch bill at The National!!Either way, check it out,!!

I'm going to try and explain this in writing, so please bare with me. You know how the eastern shore of America has hundreds (thousands?) of fancy inns with great restaurants? Did you ever notice that they are all essentially the same? Stuffy, "turn-of the-century" dining room that makes you feel important, and ensures that you'll actually pay attention to what the waiter/waitress is saying. Fancy items on the menu, but nothing over the top or surprising. Extensive wine list, old paintings, and trust-fund clientele. The Atlantic Inn is just like so many other great inns that you have to wonder if they are all in cahoots with each other. Some sort of consistency monopoly that would make a McDonald's franchiser jealous. Is that a bad thing? No. You're going to get a solid meal, with a great view, and it will be the highlight of your trip to the island. And if you're looking for a decent bourbon selection on the Block, the bar at the Atlantic is your huckleberry, hence the 4 stars.

Fantastic! The staff is caring and the accommodations are comfortable and cozy. I would certainly recommend for a stay or an event.
